Salt of the Earth
Pushpaja Joseph tells us how a relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit will enable us to be the Salt of the Earth.
As Christians we are called to be the salt of the earth. How can we become the salt of the earth in our ordinary lives?
Let the Holy Spirit Work within Us
‘Really? That is so amazing! Simple faith can stop thunder and heavy rain.’ One of my co-workers commented when I rushed to clock in for morning shift without getting wet. Most of the staff came in partly or fully wet by the heavy downpour. She asked me how I got in dry when it was pouring outside. That day, as I was entering the parking lot (we have an open, uncovered parking lot), it started to pour. Although I didn’t have an umbrella or a raincoat with me, I thought about the constant helper, the Holy Spirit, who would help me. So, I asked God to help me get to work without my uniform getting wet. I believed that God could stop the rain for me and in my mind said, ‘Yes, I know the rain will definitely stop for me because I am asking this to our loving and faithful God’. The heavy rain stopped a few minutes after I parked my car and just as I reached the reception, I could hear thunder and the rain started again.
Romans 8:11 says, And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. When we allow this Spirit to work in us, the people around us will experience and see the mighty work of the Lord. All you need to do is recognise and believe that you can do anything with the help of the Holy Spirit, and he will do it for you. Jesus gives you dominion over everything. Just abide in him and believe in him, and he will do miracles for you. The Bible says in Matthew 5:13, You are the salt of the earth. As we all know, salt is one of the cheapest grocery items we can buy; however, at the same time, without salt, no food is tasty. Salt helps to taste and preserve food. It is an essential item in our daily life. So, when Jesus says that you are to be the salt of the world, it is a significant calling. We should be good for the people we mingle with; we should be the salt that holds relationships together.
Know that we are Children of our Father, Abba
The Lord loves us so much that he calls us his children and is our Heavenly Father. As Romans 8:15 says, The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ If you are aware that you are the child of God, and the person inside is bigger than anything from the outside, then no obstacles can conquer you; rather, you will conquer the trials. For example, when you are driving a car, you may see dry leaves on the road, no one is worried about dry leaves. Instead, you confidently drive over it because the leaves crumble beneath the wheels. In that same sense, if you have the confidence and awareness about yourself, you will be able to easily walk over any problems that come your way. You will see the extraordinary miracles in your simple and ordinary life.
I remember one day when I was working the evening shift, I had a patient who couldn’t talk after a cerebral accident. After giving an anxiety pill, with her permission we prayed. I told her to just believe in our Heavenly Father whom we call, ‘Abba’, he would give her the ability to speak again. Forty minutes later, I heard a loud noise from her room. When I rushed there, she was screaming with joy at being able to speak.
Practice a Life of Friendship with Jesus Christ
When we practice a life with Jesus, doing everything with him, we will see beauty and joy in everything. When you get stuck in traffic or stand in a big line, if you are with him, you will not get upset or bored. While you are in that driving seat, you can pray for the drivers around you, enjoy the beauty of the trees at the roadside, praise the fact that you can see things, that you have a car, and that you still have the ability to drive. When we are in his company, we won’t feel the frustration of being stuck in a traffic jam. No matter what it is, whether it is happiness, joy, sorrow, sickness, or misunderstanding, you will still be happy because you are with the Almighty and your happiness comes from his company, so nothing can take away your joy. He will provide you with the wisdom to understand every situation.
I remembered an incident my friend shared with me. While she was away from her family, one of her children was being bullied by his friend. It kept going for days, so my friend used her privilege as the daughter of God to call on Abba Father. Even though her son was far away from her, she admonished her son’s friend in her heart, ‘Stop bothering my son; he belongs to Jesus,’ and thankfully that situation never happened again. See what a privilege we receive from the Lord; she commanded it non-verbally, with full confidence in the Lord. There were also times when I was in great distress. The responsibilities I had were overwhelming, so I decided to offer it all up to God. Every morning I’d say the phrase, ‘I refuse to be anxious, upset, or sad because I am the child of God, who made heaven and earth. I will rejoice in my Lord always, no matter what.’ When I say it with all my heart and put my trust in the Lord, I see miracles and enjoy the beauty of life every day.
May our Good Lord give us the grace to live in his presence, no matter what we do, and life will be exciting every day. Moreover, we can be the salt of the earth and a blessing to many if we abide and walk with Jesus daily, preserving ourselves for eternal life.
