Anil Israel reflects on how we can imitate the love of Christ by letting his lance of love pierce our hearts

In one of the scenes from the movie ‘The Passion of Christ’, “a soldier pierces Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water” (Jn 19:34), fulfilling the Old Testament prophesy “they will look upon him whom they have pierced” (Zech 12:10). This piercing of the heart opened the floodgates of Mercy for mankind.

In the Divine Mercy chaplet, we pray, “O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a ‘fountain of mercy’ for us, I trust in You” (Diary, 84). Jesus revealed to St. Faustina about the light emanating from his heart, that “the two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My tender mercy when My agonised Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross” (Diary, 299).
